A brief look at which state legislative sessions are in and out, as well as other significant events.

SessionsmapSTATES IN SESSION
  • The legislative bodies of the following jurisdictions are meeting in regular session this week: District of Columbia, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Ohio (informal). The Michigan House is in recess until July 30, while the Senate is in recess until August 13. California is in recess until August 4. The Pennsylvania House is in recess until August 4. The Senate is in recess until September 15.
  • Virginia convened March 24 for a special session to finalize the state budget. The General Assembly is slated to return from recess September 22 to continue the special session.
  • California convened April 24 for a special session to consider a reserve fund.


STATES OUT OF SESSION (OR SOON TO BE OUT)
  • North Carolina may adjourn August 1.
  • Wisconsin ended regular floor sessions May 20. The legislature officially adjourns sine die in January, 2015.
  • Illinois ended regular floor sessions May 31. Lawmakers return November 19 for a veto session. The legislature officially adjourns sine die in January, 2015.
  • New York ended regular floor sessions June 20. The legislature officially adjourns sine die in January, 2015.
  • The following states have completed their 2014 regular sessions: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
  • The legislative bodies of the following states do not meet in 2014, unless called into special session: Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, and Texas.


GUBERNATORIAL DEADLINES
  • Delaware Governor Jack Markell (D) -- who possesses a pocket veto -- has until July 30 to sign or veto legislation that reaches his desk.
  • Alaska Governor Sean Parnell (R) -- who does not possess a pocket veto -- has 20 days from transmittal (excluding Sundays) to sign or veto legislation that reaches his desk.
  • New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan (D) -- who does not possess a pocket veto -- has five days from transmittal (excluding Sundays) to sign or veto legislation that reaches her desk.
