Elections 2009 Election Snapshot
On November 3, 2009, New Jersey and Virginia held elections for governor, lieutenant governor, General Assembly (NJ), and House of Delegates (VA).
New Jersey: Chris Christie (R) upset incumbent Jon S. Corzine (D) to become New Jersey’s 55th governor. Kimberly M. Guadagno (R) was elected as the state’s first lieutenant governor, a post added to the state constitution by a voter referendum in 2005. Democrats retained control of the Assembly.
Virginia: Robert F. McDonnell (R) defeated R. Creigh Deeds (D) to become the state’s 71st governor. Bill Bolling (R) was re-elected lieutenant governor and Republicans retained control of the House of Delegates.
