Hawaii: Special Session Adjourns
September 05, 2017

Lawmakers concluded their special session late Friday, after approving a $2.4 billion rail funding project for Honolulu. The new monies will be financed by a one-percent hotel tax increase and a $103 million cap of the county share of revenues from the tax. The legislation also allows the other counties to raise their general excise tax by one-half percent and extends Honolulu’s current surcharge for three years (to 2030).

Governor David Ige (D) indicated that he would promptly sign the measure into law by today.
